IPE - Shadowing
IPE - Shadowing Health InterProfessionals (SIPS Mentoring)
What is the Shadowing Health InterProfessionals (SIPS) - "Shadowing"
The SIPS Sessions are designed to give first year medical students meaningful clinical experience with healthcare teams. Throughout the course, students are assigned to healthcare professionals in an inpatient or outpatient clinical setting. Students will read about, actively observe, interact with, and learn from these professionals.
Goals
Introduce students to the team-based aspect of the healthcare environment early on in their career
Begin to develop collaborative skills and awareness around respectful, appropriate and professional communication for each role on the team
Change the hierarchy of the healthcare system
Provide a clinical context to support student learning
Why should I mentor?
To teach students about your role on the healthcare team
To help students understand how to effectively collaborate with professionals in your field
To support students' learning and help prepare them as they transition to the clinical environment
To encourage multidisciplinary collaboration
What we request of clinical mentors:
Allow the student to observe you in your daily tasks while not impeding on patient care or your responsibilities (2 hour observation)
Talk to the student about how you approach your work and patients
Engage the student with patients as you and the student feel comfortable, always asking permission of the patient and ensuring the student is comfortable.
If a student is knowledgeable about a particular skill (e.g., taking blood pressure, history and physical), please consider allowing them to assist (with patient consent.)
Think of ways to make the learner feel welcome (e.g., introducing student to others on the team)
Get approval from your supervisor if needed (Let us know if we can help.)
Students are expected to:
Actively observe while you perform your daily responsibilities (students are “actively observing," but need to be engaged)
Ask questions when appropriate
Be professional, arrive on time, dress appropriately for your site
Experiences with students are scheduled at a time that is convenient for you both and will be determined by the student directly communicating with you to make those arrangements.
